So what are Demographics? They are a way to organise groups of people into subcategories. Often used in business. For example a group of people may include people of different races, from different locations, and who are different in a number of ways. Businesses use demographics to appeal to their target audience. People from one subcategory may not like what somebody from a different subcategory will like, and so they are instead sold things which the will prefer. This is also a large part of film. Many young children may enjoy "technicolour candy floss trees adventure 2!"but some adults may not, and are more drawn to more mature films. This is demographics.
It is important because otherwise movies (that may be really good ) may just fail, because they are shooting at an audience that will not appreciate their film, and not because they are bad. This is also important in advertising. An advert designed for young teens may not appeal to a older audience, and so the film will lose sales. Using their demographics the film can reach the largest audience and so, make the most money possible.
