Photoshop has a plethora of useful tools, which make it arguably the most well received image editing program to ever exist. When my grandparents know that Photoshop exists, that is more then enough evidence for its popularity.
Using photoshop you can change the colours in an image, add tints and other effects, which can drastically change an images effect on an audience. For example a perhaps graceful picture of a horse in a field, could be altered to become the poster for a disaster movie involving the Dread Lord, dark ruler of the void, but in horse form. Exposure plays a large role in this. Using exposure you could instead make the poster about a holy horse summoned from the heavens to save a hellish scorched earth instead, surrounding the horse in holy light, etc.
It is commonly used for small changes, such as making actors look more appealing, removing spots with the spot tool, and cleaning up messy beards and sleepy eyes, into more clean and energetic ones. It is also possible to change hair colours, and eye colours rather easily, unless things become more elaborate. Of course comedic changes are also possible, such as face switching, etc, which to be honest, is only limited by the users knowledge and imagination. If perhaps you have a poster downloaded of a favourite film, but one actor ruins the poster, with photoshop, you could remove this actor completely from existence! Well just from the image. But you can dream...
